England seniors played Riba de Ave from Portugal on Saturday evening to a crowd of around 200 spectators. The Portuguese pushed our boys hard and were a good match for England to play in this friendly which was in preparation for the World Championships in Switzerland this June. Riba de Ave stepped in at the last minute after the Angola team failed to obtain their visas in time.

Today saw the first 600 Club draw. Two cash prizes were today picked out of the new purpose build drum at the monthly National training session in the Bushfields Sports Centre in Peterborough. Keith Allen NRHA’s President over saw the procedure and rolled the drum for the first time in front of players and parents. One lucky player picked the two numbers from the drum and it was announced that Aileen Barker (NRHA’s General Secretary) won the monthly £150 cash prize and Ray Stewart (players parent) won the quarterly £250 cash prize. Owen Stewart has son (pictured above) gratefully accepted the prize on behalf of his father. When Owen received the prize he quietly said “I can have my new skates now” but time will tell as to whether dad had other plans for the cash. When Aileen Barker was contacted later she said she would be putting the cash towards the HBU European fund.

This weekend was to see England seniors play the Angola senior team in preparation for the senior World Championships in Montreux, Switzerland. Due to the Angola team failing to register for their Visas in time they will not be playing England Seniors on Saturday evening and Sunday Morning. Carlos Amaral NRHA’s Head Coach has arranged for a Portuguese team Riba de Ave to come over to England to take the place of team Angola. Riba de Ave have their home venue approx. 40km north of Porto.
See their website

The schedule for Saturday evening will remain the same apart for the team substitution. We are expecting a re-arrangement of times on the Sunday. The National Cup semi-final HBU v Halifax will start at 9am.

600 Club to start

600 club

The first ever 600 club draw will take place between the National training sessions   on Sunday 20th May 2007 at Bushfields Sports Centre, Peterborough. The winners of the £150 and £250 quarterly prizes will be known at around 12.30pm when the draw takes place.

This competition was conceived to raise funds to finance a person to develop roller hockey within England. Initial numbers of players are presently lower than we had hoped for and this is why this first set of prizes was lower than had first been planned. It is hoped that as this new draw becomes more widely known about new people will come on board and this will increase the prize money.

The winning draw numbers will be posted on this website on Sunday afternoon. Good Luck.

Congratulations to Herne Bay United seniors who were confirmed winners of the 2007 English Premier League played last night at the pier pavilion in Herne Bay. Bury took an early lead with Darren Willis putting the first goal of the match past HBU keeper Danny Barton. HBU held Bury at arms length for most of the first half but only minutes from half time HBU pulled back two goals within 50 seconds of each other.

The second half saw HBU take the score to 7–2, after a timeout Bury put the pressure on to claw back another four goals. Finally HBU put the last goal of the match past Bury’s Kristy Ingram who played a blinder and for me was the player of the match. The final score was 8-6.

Next season Herne Bay United will enter the new format european league giving English spectators the chance to see top European clubs at the pier.

Next weekend will see an International flavor to Roller Hockey in Herne Bay. England seniors will play Angola on 19th May in preparation for the world championships in Montreux, Switzerland in June. The Angola team has been in training since the Coupe des Nations back in April where their match with France was a forfeit due to their goalkeeper being stretchered off and the second keeper receiving a disputed blue card (see http://www.coupedesnations.ch/photos-07/public/index.php on the “main menu” then 07-04-07)

Angola will also play Herne Bay Utd on Sunday 20th May after the HBU v Halifax National Cup semi final match. It is hoped there will be a good attendance on Saturday evening, at the Coupe des Nations Angola played very physical matches testing the refs and giving the spectators value for money. I do enjoy their matches, even from behind the camera.
