The Quevert club in Dinan France will be the focal point of young roller hockey players during the week commencing 14th September with the under 17’s European Roller Hockey Championships. Eight teams will compete for this annual title, Andorra, Germany, Portugal, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and England. England will play their first match against Italy on the first day of this two pool tournament. Each team play one match each day with the first game starting around 4.30pm with three further evening matches. The Under 17’s European’s under the direction of the CERH is an introductory level to official International competition within Europe for our young players and is often the debut of many great players.
Nine members of the England senior team arrived in Vigo, Spain yesterday (Friday) and due to work commitments Brendan Barker our tenth player will follow on Wednesday. After arriving in the northern Spanish town the team had a brief rest then travelled to the nearby rink home of Spanish first division club Vigo Stick for their first training session in Spain.
Playing a conference competition is not a new thing we in the UK played it up until six years ago after which the Inter-Regional competition was introduced. Spain stage their conference competition in Oveido last weekend where the top team from each of the eight regions competed for the National under 17 champions. It was a treat for me to be able to go and photograph some of Spains future national team players. Josep Ordeig, Spains national coach was present for all of the three day tournament, may be looking for his U17 team for Dinan France in September. I managed to get some cracking shots of the young hopefuls and see some excellent Roller Hockey with friends from the Senior European championships of last year.
Ten teams two days of roller hockey and one winner, CP Ribes from Spain. Congratulations to our European cousins from Catalunia who won the final beating Kings Lynn in a carefully planed attacking match. Teams from as far south as Plymouth all came together in the East of England to play for this prestigious trophy. This was a two day event starting on Saturday in two venues, Burwell and Soham and ending on Sunday at Soham with the final matches.
